Borneo diving - Mabul Island (Malaysia)

(Wednesday 29 February 2012) by Lynda
Sipadan, divers heaven, colorful corals, steep cliffs and an abundance of aquatic animals: green turtles, hakwbill turtles, sea snakes, sharks en reeffish in all colors, shapes and sizes. Unfortunately you have to book ages in advance to make sure you can dive Sipandan, only 120 permits a day and they are very expensive. So I settled for neigboring Mabul.
Preparing for my refresher
Preparing for my refresher

My plan was to go snorkling for some days, but being on a boat with divers preparing for their dive, seeing the familiair routines, hearing the sound of the tanks banging against the boat, and me only scratching the surface of this amazing waterparadise while snorkling.....but would I dare to go diving without my buddy? Only one way to find out! So I took a refresher and went back in. It all came flooding back to me, Bruce Willis Ruins All Films, or Bangkok Women Really Are Fellows..... I had two great dives and I promissed

myself, next time I will not let 5 years pass inbetween two dives, such a waste. I spotted loads of fish and my first nudibrances...purple with white, black and white, white with red dots, green and orange, amazing creatures. Saw lionfish and cute puffers, crocodile fish and scorpionfish (they really do look like rocks so you have to look hard), leaf fish, cornetfish and baracuda's. And ofcourse I did dive with the great green turtles, so big but so elegant when they pass by, and the smaller hawkbill turtle. Think I saw around 20 of them in only 1 dive. Amazing place this is. I spend most of my time underwater just smiling, my smile was soo big it hardly fitted in my mask.

Spend the afternoon on the beach to relax. In the evening I had my first night dive ever. This trip is about overcoming fear, and night diving was also one of them. So I did it, a bit nervous so my boyance was not that great, but I did it and we even spotted an octopus and more nudibrances.

Mabul island was great and diving again was also great, think it will take some time before the smile on my face will fade away. So tonight on my ipod I'll listen to the Gorillaz - Feel Good inc.

P.S. the underwater pictures in my gallery are not mine.......renting an underwatercamera was really expensive so I borrowed some pictures from the internet.....
